Name the dimensions before comparing cones
Use L for axial length, d for the small-end inner diameter and D for the large-end inner diameter. Inner diameter means the open bore, not the outside of the rim. Record outer diameter separately when it is part of the drawing. A phrase such as “top diameter” is incomplete unless it identifies the inside or outside and the measurement plane.
Prepare a reference and a measurement record
- Identify the cone, supplier lot and drawing revision. Record the date and condition of the sample.
- Use suitable measuring tools checked for the task. Agree how the paper sample will be supported so it is not compressed during measurement.
- Measure axial length between the end faces, rather than along the sloping wall.
- Measure the nose and base bore at agreed distances from the rims. Note these positions with each result.
- Record readings in multiple orientations at the same cross-section when checking variation. Agree the roundness method with QC.
- Weigh finished empty samples on a suitable balance. Record paper GSM separately from cone weight.
Compare several samples and lots
Record individual measurements and the observed range rather than reporting only an average. Agree sample selection and quantity with the mill’s QC team; there is no sampling quantity that establishes suitability for every order. If the sample differs from the drawing, resolve that discrepancy before approving production.
What to send with an inquiry
Send a drawing with labeled dimensions, measurement positions, tolerance requirements and revision identifier. Photographs of the nose, base, side wall and holder can explain the application, but cannot prove fit on their own. Include rim profile, notch detail, finish and the intended winding setup. Send your exact winding-machine model, reference cone or drawing, taper, finish, quantity and destination through our sample and quotation form. Include any special inspection or packing requirement so it can be confirmed in writing.
