Identifying the Correct Taper for Your Murata Machine

Murata's autoconer and cone-winder range is set up for one of the two standard taper angles depending on model and winding head configuration — there's no single taper that fits every Murata machine. The most reliable way to confirm which one your machine needs is to check the technical manual under the spindle or cone-holder specification section, or look for a taper angle marking on the spindle assembly itself.

If neither is available on the floor, send us a photo of an empty cone holder on your Murata winding head. The visible taper angle and notch shape let us match the correct specification without you having to track down documentation or guess from memory. QPRO and Process Coner models take a V-notch cone as standard — if the notch shape doesn't match, the yarn tail doesn't seat correctly at doffing, which shows up on the floor as a re-thread or an auto-stop rather than an obvious cone defect, so it's worth confirming notch shape alongside taper angle when you send us a photo. It also helps to be precise about which Murata machine you actually run: "QPRO" and "QPRO EX" take the same cone specification, but Process Coner, Mach Splicer, and Vortex MVS are distinct machines from QPRO, not alternate names for it — telling us the exact model avoids a mismatched cone shipped against the wrong assumption.

Choosing the Right Surface Finish for Your Yarn

Surface finish is the friction interface between the cone and the first few yarn layers wound onto it — get it wrong and the yarn slips before tension builds, regardless of how accurate the taper is.

Smooth finish suits natural-fibre yarns at standard winding speeds, where the yarn's own surface irregularities provide enough grip against the cone. Velvet finish adds controlled texture for synthetic yarns, compact-spun cotton, and any yarn wound at high speed, where a smooth surface alone doesn't generate enough friction to hold the opening layers. Embossed finish is used for high-twist or high-liveness yarns that need a stronger mechanical anchor during early-layer winding to stop the package springing back on itself.

The right finish affects three things on a Murata line specifically: unwinding behaviour downstream, since a cone that grips too little sheds yarn unevenly at the next process; package build, since slippage on the first layers throws off the whole package geometry; and handling during transport, since a package that's loose at the core is more prone to telescoping in transit. Confirm Your Spec Before Ordering

We don't guess at fit, and we'd rather you didn't either. Before placing a sample order, send us one of the following on WhatsApp: the dimensions of the cone you're currently running, if you have them, or a photo of an empty cone holder on your Murata machine. Either one is usually enough for us to confirm the correct specification and quote against it, without needing a spec sheet from the machine manufacturer first.
