Identifying the Correct Taper for Your Savio Machine

Savio's Orion, Polar, and Espero autoconers span more than one generation of winding-head design, so the taper your machine takes isn't something you can safely assume from the model name alone — it depends on how the specific heads on your line were configured. Check the machine's technical manual under the cone-holder or spindle specification, or look for a taper marking stamped on the spindle assembly itself.

If the documentation isn't to hand or the marking has worn off, the fastest reliable route is a photo of an empty cone holder on the actual machine — that lets us match the taper and notch profile directly rather than working from a model number that may not tell the full story. Our full paper cone specifications page has the complete taper and dimension reference if you want more background before reaching out.

Choosing the Right Surface Finish for Your Yarn

Surface finish is what grips the first few wraps of yarn as the package starts building — it matters as much as taper accuracy, because even a perfectly fitted cone will let yarn slip if the surface can't hold it.

Smooth finish works well for natural-fibre yarns run at standard winding speeds, where the yarn's own surface texture provides enough friction against the cone. Velvet finish adds controlled texture for synthetic yarns, compact-spun cotton, or any yarn wound at higher speed, where a smooth surface doesn't generate enough grip during the opening layers. Embossed finish gives high-twist or high-liveness yarns a stronger mechanical anchor, stopping the package from springing back during early winding.

On a Savio autoconer specifically, getting the finish right affects unwinding behaviour at the next process (a cone that grips too little sheds yarn unevenly), package build quality (slippage on the first layers distorts the whole package geometry), and handling in transit (a loose core is more prone to telescoping). Tell us your yarn type when you request a quote and we'll confirm the right finish — see our paper cone for yarn winding page for more on how finish interacts with winding performance.

Confirm Your Spec Before Ordering

We don't guess at fit, and we'd rather you didn't either. Before placing a sample order, send us one of the following on WhatsApp: the dimensions of the cone you're currently running, if you have them, or a photo of an empty cone holder on your Savio machine. Either one is usually enough for us to confirm the correct specification and quote against it.

Cones are supplied in the taper angles and finishes listed above; you confirm fit against your machine's own cone holder before committing to a bulk order — a small sample batch is the fastest way to do that. For everything else this page doesn't cover, see the full machine compatibility hub.
